AFC expands programming with opening of downtown headquarters

Cincinnati OH—Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati (AFC) has opened a downtown headquarters at 127 West Ninth St, in a renovated c.1840 townhouse. The nonprofit membership organization conducts education programs that increase awareness and encourage improvement of the built environment of Greater Cincinnati.

Founded in 1986, the Architectural Foundation has grown in strength and numbers over the past five years. AFC president Christine Schoonover says that, “Opening the downtown office was the logical next step in fulfilling the foundation’s mission. It will allow us to take an increasingly active role in the community.”

AFC sponsors and makes grants for:

  • In-school and adult architectural education activities
  • Printing and distribution of books and pamphlets – Architecture in Cincinnati: An Illustrated History of Designing and Building an American City (AFC with Ohio University Press, 2006. Sold at area museum shops, booksellers, and through AFC’s online bookstore, www.architecturecincy.org.)
  • Online publications – Cincinnati Architects, A Biographical Dictionary by Walter E. Langsam, www.architecturecincy.org was published November 1, 2008.
  • Architectural tourism - AFC provides services (planning and coordination for groups) and distribution of publications that encourage visits to Cincinnati.

AFC makes awards for:

  • Hammer Award to 20-year plus practitioner in architecture or design. (John Senhauser, FAIA will receive the 2008 award on November 14.)
  • Apple Award is given each May to an individual who exemplifies AFC’s mission. Honorees in the past four years were Buck Niehoff Esq., Stanley M. Kaplan M.D., Thomas R. Schiff, and the Honorable Arn Bortz.
  • Grants for architectural and design education. Recent recipients include Architecture By Children, Cincinnati Museum Center, and Cincinnati Preservation Association.

New programs at AFC 127 West Ninth Street Gallery:

  • EXHIBIT – “Gateway to the City: Cincinnati Union Terminal at 75,” will be open to the public Nov. 22 and 23, noon-2 p.m. No charge.
  • GALLERY TALK – Scott Gampfer, curator of “Gateway” and director of history collections and preservation at Cincinnati Museum Center, gives an illustrated gallery talk Nov. 22, 10:30 a.m. Fee $5. Free to AFC members.
  • MEETING and RECEPTION – AFC Annual Member Meeting. Nov. 20. Cincinnati Art Museum director and AFC trustee Aaron Betsky comments on the Venice Biennale. Free to AFC members only. Join online at www.architecturecincy.org

  • Lunch lecture - “Cincinnati Designs for China.” Architects, landscape architects, and graphic designers talk about their current projects in China. Dec. 8, noon, at Mercantile Library. Reservations required: 513-621-0717.
